OPSEU LOCAL 374

RESOURCES

Why should I join OPSEU?

In Canada, workers have the right to join a union and choose a union to represent them when dealing with their employer.

Being an OPSEU member means you have the information, trained stewards and the programs needed to negotiate better working conditions.

Each member has the aid of an OPSEU representative who provides assistance with Collective Bargaining, Grievances, Health and Safety, Arbitrations and other work-related issues.

Each OPSEU local decides its priorities for bargaining, when to settle a new contract, and how to manage funds.

OPSEU’s strength comes from individual members working toward common goals such as improving wages and benefits, improving health and safety conditions, and making workplaces better.

What is a collective agreement?

A collective agreement is a written agreement that sets out the employment terms and conditions for unionized employees, as well as the rights, privileges and duties of the union, employer, and employees.

Collective bargaining is the negotiation process between a union and an employer.

Some of the steps that may be part of the negotiation process generally include:

    - Notice to bargain
    - Conciliation
    - Mediation
    - Interest arbitration

What are By-Laws?

Bylaws are the constitution of your Local Union. They define your rights and responsibilities as a local member, they say how elections will be run, and they set the powers for your officers. Your local union bylaws can be amended, to make improvements.
